Phone scam targeting the elderly

Posted on 11th September 2015

There have been warnings in the UK of a phone scam targeting the elderly whilst pretending to be the police and even your bank.

“The criminals are targeting elderly residents and using clever guises, such as convincing their victims that all of their money is at risk in their bank accounts – and then asking them to transfer the cash over to them.” – Cornish Guardian

Phone scam & fraud

Although police are working hard to find and arrest those involved it’s worth being sure who you are talking to on the phone and sharing this article with elderly loved ones. Being a victim of fraud can be damaging both financially and emotionally.

We have out together a short and simple guide to help stay safe from phone scams targeting the elderly. See our top three tips below to stay safe from phone scams.

3 Tips to prevent being scammed

  1.  Don’t transfer any money over the phone, try to go into your bank and speak to someone face to face if at all unsure.
  2.  If asked to call your bank always phone a friend or family member in-between calls to check that the line hasn’t been held open by the previous caller.
  3. Call the police on 101 if you are unsure of a phone call you have received to get their advice.
