For many, mobility scooters turn those tasks that age or illness have rendered tricky into possibilities again. But, for people who feel they’re only just reaching the stage at which a scooter might benefit them, it can be a confusing world to plunge into.
To help, we here at Telecare have compiled a brief list of some of the best mobility scooters available at the moment.
It’s worth noting that there are a number of factors to consider when making your choice, like top speed, operating range, charge time and, of course, what diameter of hole it’s likely to leave in your well-sewn pockets.
The EV RiderXpress
The EV RiderXpress stands apart by being both transportable and having suspension, a combination very few scooters have. Easy to disassemble, it is simple to take with you if you need to travel, and doesn’t occupy too much space in the home.
It has a maximum speed of 5mph, an operating range of 12.5 miles and a charge time of 6 to 8 hours. At around £1400 it sits comfortably in the upper middle of the scooter price range.
As it is relatively light weight scooter, it cannot tackle more taxing terrain like beach sand or lava, so it’s better suited to a purely urban, tarmacked environment.
Another potential issue is battery life, but that’s very much dependent on the amount of use it’s going to get.
Zip’r 3 Xtra
A three-wheeler for those of you with a more triadic mindset. Like the EV above, it can be disassembled for easy storage.
The key thing with this one is that it has a stretch frame with a larger seat for people who struggle to sit comfortably on scooters with a standard frame. It has a max speed of 4.25 mph and a charge time of eight to ten hours.
It’s also relatively cheap at under £800.
SmartScoot Lithium
Incredibly lightweight, the SmartScoot completely eschews the standard frame in favour of a simple, stainless steel skeletal structure. It’s simple to fold away and is relatively nippy with a max speed of 7mph.
This one is airline approved, meaning you can use it right up until the point you get on a plane. The only downside? The price. This one costs just shy of £2500.
Days Medical Strider ST6
This one stands apart on this list by being the only road-legal scooter here. This is another factor worth taking into account when selecting your scooter: where do you want to use it? With a top speed of 8mph, this model can be used on public highways and off-road.
You can switch between speech settings depending on where you’re scooting. It has a 31 mile range. It can’t be disassembled though, so worth taking note storage-wise.
In terms of price, it’s pretty hefty at £2700-£2800.
